6 Fun PE Activities for Kids

Do rainy days, cold weather, or small spaces make homeschool PE a challenge? With a little creativity, you can turn your living room into a mini fitness zone and keep kids moving no matter the weather.

1. Obstacle Course Adventure for Indoor PE Fun

Turn your living room into a mini adventure course using household items. Set up pillows to hop over, chairs to crawl under, and tape lines to balance on.

Set Up Your Obstacle Course:

  1. Jump Over: Line up pillows or cushions for a jumping station.

  2. Crawl Under: Use a chair or table as a tunnel.

  3. Balance Challenge: Lay down tape or a rope as a “balance beam.”

  4. Final Dash: End with a sprint across the room.

Bonus Learning Opportunity: Have your child design the course themselves (hello, STEM skills!) and time each round to encourage improvement.

Want a structured homeschool PE plan? Try the Horizons Physical Education series, designed for elementary and middle school students.

2. Balloon Volleyball for Homeschool PE Games

No net? No problem! Use a balloon and a piece of string (or a couch as the divider) for a friendly game of volleyball inside. This game helps with hand-eye coordination, reflexes, balance, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Variation: Try a “keep it up” mode by counting how many taps your child can get in a row before the balloon touches the ground.

Learn & Move: LIFEPAC 10th Grade Biology explores body systems and human genetics, showing how exercise strengthens muscles and supports overall health.

3. Dance Party Challenge – A Fun PE Activity for Kids

Put on your child’s favorite music and have a dance-off. Dancing is an excellent way to improve gross motor skills, boost energy levels, and encourage self-expression.

Make It Fun: Use an exercise dice (write different dance moves on each side) or play “freeze dance” to keep them on their toes!

Faith-Based Connection: Check out Monarch’s Bible curriculum to explore worship through movement as a meaningful way to integrate faith and fitness.

4. Animal Walk Races (Perfect for Younger Kids!)

Transform PE into a playful challenge. Call out different animal names and have your kids move like that animal across the room. Some fun options include:

  • Crab walk to strengthen core muscles

  • Bunny hops to improve leg power

  • Duck walk to challenge coordination

Make It a Competition: Time each round and see if they can beat their best time.

Cross-Subject Tie-In: Pair this activity with Horizons Preschool lessons on animals and habitats to make movement fun while learning about God’s creatures.

5. Strength & Coordination Challenge (Build Confidence & Focus!)

Need a quick, no-equipment PE workout? A strength and coordination challenge is a great way to build confidence, improve focus, and burn off extra energy indoors.

Example Circuit:

  • 10 push-ups or wall push-ups for beginners

  • 15 squats

  • 10-second plank hold

  • 20 high knees

  • Hop on one foot for 10 seconds on each leg

Make It Fun: Let your child track their progress each day and try to improve their form, time, or repetitions. This builds discipline, focus, and a sense of achievement.

Science Connection: Monarch’s science courses explore how exercise strengthens muscles and bones, making this a great cross-subject tie-in.

6. Indoor Scavenger Hunt Workout (Active Learning!)

Write down movement-based challenges on slips of paper and hide them around the house. When your child finds a challenge, they must complete it before moving to the next one.

Example Challenges:

  • Do 10 jumping jacks before opening the next clue

  • Hop on one foot while searching for the next card

  • Crab-walk to the next room to find the next mission

Make It a Learning Game: Tie the scavenger hunt to their curriculum by hiding math problems, Bible verses, or history facts inside the clues for a double-learning win.

Keep Kids Moving Year-Round

PE does not have to be complicated. Even on rainy or cold days, these fun indoor activities help your homeschooler burn energy, stay healthy, and improve focus. They also make great brain breaks between lessons!
