Across the country, colleges are recruiting homeschoolers and homeschool graduates are changing their professors’ views on the effectiveness of homeschooling.
However, despite the increasing demand for high-achieving homeschoolers, as well as a variety of homeschool-friendly colleges available to graduates, homeschool families still need to have a strong familiarity with the college application process and what select upper-education institutions are looking for on your student’s educational resume. With that in mind, U.S. News & World Report recently listed these three tips for homeschoolers after consulting with a few college admissions experts:
1. Provide information about academic curriculum.
“It’s really important that a homeschooled student shares with us a really detailed account as to how they came to be a homeschooled student and what they’ve done with their time as one,” Brittney Dorow, the assistant dean of admission at Colgate University in New York, told U.S. News & World Report.
2. Know that test scores matter.
Standardized tests are still the easiest way for schools to compare the knowledge of their incoming students.
3. Take courses at a community college.
“Not only do these courses provide college credit and serve as an example of the student pursuing courses with academic rigor,” wrote Farran Powell for U.S. News & World Report, “but classes are also a way for homeschoolers to make connections with instructors who can provide college recommendation letters.”
