Nineteen lessons cover short and long vowel words. Exceptions to the rules are also covered. Suggested for Grade 2, when the child is reading fluently.

Success in spelling contains two kinds of word lists: a master spelling list for the teacher, and pretest lesson forms for the student with the words already printed on them. Daily lesson plans with assignments and activities are included, along with complete instructions for using the program. Pretests are given at the beginning of each list and only missed words are on the final test each week—there is no sense teaching what the child already knows. Besides the nineteen lessons within Success in spelling Level 1, there are seventeen lessons of commonly used words which do not necessarily follow phonetic patterns. Level 1 covers four spelling rules—short vowel rule, silent e rule, open syllable rule, and two-vowel rule.
