Description

Discover the fundamental concepts of computer programming with this semester-long career course for students in grades 7 and 8. Throughout the semester, students learn how particular programming concepts work and put them into practice using a platform called Scratch. This hands-on course requires a lot of critical thinking as students design, write, and troubleshoot computer programs. Throughout this course, students are not only introduced to the basics of coding, but delve deeply into the thought processes behind designing technology. Students learn the Engineering Design Process and follow this process to create games, simulations, and even a mobile application. Students also examine the impact of technology from a global perspective. Multimedia and interactive elements are built into every lesson to ensure a high-level of student engagement. By the end of the semester, students gain the skills they need to write programs in Scratch, run a simple video game, run a simulation, and design graphics.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Monarch and is it accredited?

Monarch curriculum uses mastery learning techniques to promote independent cognitive reasoning and educate your student to apply what they learn to real-life situations. This faith-based, fully-online homeschool program offers assignment screens that show both students and parents daily assignments, due dates, grades, progress, and more.

Recordkeeping is quick and painless for parents. Approximately 85% of your student's work is graded automatically. From the reports section of the parent dashboard, report cards, grade reports, and daily work reports can easily be generated as often as necessary. These records can be used for your state, other schools, and college admissions if required.

Real-time content updates automatically to keep the AOP curriculum current and the secure data storage keeps a student's academic record for seven years.

While a tablet or phone might work for some of the content, we strongly recommend against it. The best experience is on a desktop or laptop computer.

Accreditation is verification by an outside agency that a school is meeting appropriate expectations and is actively pursuing excellence by improving school standards. Because Monarch is not a school, it cannot be accredited. If you’re seeking accreditation, consider Ignite Christian Academy, the official online school of AOP.

Homeschooling is legal in all 50 states. You can familiarize yourself with the homeschooling laws in your state with this helpful reference from HSLDA.

Is the Monarch Full Access plan right for me if I only need a few courses for my student?

Depending on the quantity of courses you need, Monarch Full Access may be the best plan for you. We highly recommend students in grades 6+ use Full Access to unlock the electives library and expand their learning.

Single course subscription courses are available if you find it is the best deal for you.

What grade should I assign my child per subject?

New Monarch grade assessments are coming soon. In the meantime, we recommend using our LIFEPAC independent study placement tests to explore the grade your child is most appropriately placed per subject. From there, you are encouraged to read the scope and sequence for your choice on the individual course page to confirm your grade selected is the best match.

Mastery placement tests are provided for 1st through 8th grade as well as 7th through 12th grade. Instructions for scoring and evaluation of test results are provided in the answer key pages. Your child should be able to complete the tests for this Christian homeschool curriculum on their own as long as they understands the activity directions.
